The Treatment of ‘Nomen’ in the First Slovenian Grammar (Bohorič 1584)

Summary
The article focuses on the treatment of the noun (nomen) in the grammar published in 1584 by the first Slovenian grammarian, Adam Bohorič (c.1520–1598), under the title Arcticae horulae succisivae de Latinocarniolana literatura (“Spare winter hours on Latin-Carniolan grammar”). The chapter on the noun is examined in the larger context of European grammar-writing, revealing the Bohorič grammar to be a fully-fledged humanist text. In addition, the article explains certain aspects of the work which have sometimes been criticised as weaknesses, provides graphic representations of its structure, and describes Bohorič’s debt to Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560), the similarities between his work and the German grammar by Johannes Clajus (1535–1592), and the parallels with other grammarians. Moreover, some new findings are presented concerning the glossaries accompanying the paradigms.
Résumé
L’article porte sur le traitement du nom (nomen) dans la grammaire Arcticae horulae succisivae de Latinocarniolana literatura (“Heures de loisir hivernales sur la grammaire latino-carnelienne”) qui fut publiée en 1584 par Adam Bohorič (c.1520–1598), premier grammairien slovène. Le chapitre sur le nom essaie de présenter cette problématique dans le contexte plus large de la tradition grammairienne européenne, montrant que la grammaire de Bohorič est un texte humaniste exemplaire. Outre cela, l’article aborde certaines analyses de cette grammaire qui furent souvent critiquées comme ses points faibles. L’article offre aussi des représentations graphiques de la structure de la grammaire, et décrit également ce que doit Bohorič à Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560), analyse les similarités entre son ouvrage et celui du grammairien allemand Johannes Clajus (1535–1592), ainsi que les parallèles avec d’autres grammairiens de l’époque. De plus, le texte présente certaines découvertes portant sur les glossaires de Bohorič qui accompagnent les paradigmes.
Zusammenfassung
Der Beitrag behandelt das Kapitel über das Nomen in der Grammatik (1584) des slowenischen Grammatikers Adam Bohorič (c.1520–1598), Arcticae horulae succisivae de Latinocarniolana literatura (“Winterliche Mußestunden über die lateinisch-krainerische Grammatik”) im Hinblick auf die zeitgenössische europäischen Grammatikschreibung. Bohoričs Grammatik wird als ein gut durchdachter humanistischer Text vorgestellt und seine Erklärungsvorschläge, die in einigen bisherigen Abhandlungen als Schwächen angesehen worden waren, einsichtig gemacht sowie die Struktur seines Textes graphisch dargestellt. Ferner werden Bohoričs Anlehnung an Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560) und die Ähnlichkeiten seiner Grammatik mit der deutschen Grammatik von Johannes Clajus (1535–1592) und einige Parallelen zwischen Bohorič und anderen Grammatikern beschrieben. Im Beitrag werden auch einige neue Erkenntnisse über Bohoričs kleine Wörterbücher, die neben den Paradigmen stehen, erörtert.
