Lambert ten Kate and Justus-Georg Schottelius

Theoretical similarities between Dutch and German early modern linguistics

Summary
Until now the Dutch linguist Lambert ten Kate (1674–1731), famous for his early discovery of Ablaut, has not been honoured with a publication concerning his relationship to German 17th-century linguists. Such an interpretation, however, shows great similarities between ten Kate and especially Justus-Georg Schottelius (1612–1676) with regard to three fundamental theoretical issues: the primacy of the roots, the authority of historical material, and the importance of analogy and regularity. They both integrate these when assuming the existence of a suprahistorical system of roots on the basis of which the rational processes of derivation and composition create language as it is.
Résumé
Le linguiste néerlandais Lambert ten Kate (1674–1731), devenu célèbre à cause de sa découverte prématurée de l’Ablaut, n’a jusqu’ici pas retenu l’attention qu’il mérite au niveau de son rapport avec certains linguistes allemands du XVIIe siècle. Toutefois, une telle interprétation permet de faire ressortir de grandes ressemblances entre ten Kate et, en particulier Justus-Georg Schottelius (1612–1676), en ce qui concerne trois questions théoriques fondamentales: la primauté des racines, l’autorité des matériaux historiques et l’importance de l’analogie et la régularité. Tous les deux réunissent ces trois questions en supposant qu’il existe un système suprahistorique des racines qui permet aux processus rationnels de dérivation et de composition de construire la langue.
Zusammenfassung
Der wegen seiner frühen Entdeckung des Ablauts berühmte niederländische Sprachforscher Lambert ten Kate (1674–1731) ist bis dato nicht beehrt worden mit einer Publikation hinsichtlich seiner Beziehung zu den deutschen Sprachforschern des 17. Jahrhunderts. Eine solche Interpretation aber zeigt große Ähnlichkeiten zwischen Ten Kate und vor allem Justus-Georg Schottelius (1612–1676) in Bezug auf drei fundamentale, theoretische Fragen: das Primat der Wurzeln, die Autorität des historischen Materials und die Wichtigkeit von Analogie und Regelmäßigkeit. Diese werden verbunden zu einem suprahistorischen System der Wurzeln, auf dessen Grundlage die rationalen Prozesse der Derivation und der Komposition die Sprache schaffen.
