Summary
This article examines the degree to which Saussure has been well served in English translation. It looks at features such as the disappearance of markers of uncertainty and the contribution of sentence structure to the development of a convincing argument, to see how these fare in the various versions. Taking the key Saussurean terms of langage, langue and parole, it evaluates the translations of the Cours de linguistique générale by Baskin (1959), Harris (1983), as well as those edited by Harris, Komatsu and Wolf (1993, 1996, 1997).
Résumé
Dans cet article nous examinons dans quelle mesure la pensée de Saussure a été fidèlement traduite en anglais. Nous constatons la disparition de certains marqueurs de certitude et la modification de la structure logique de certaines phrases. Ensuite, nous prenons comme exemple la traduction des mots-clis de ‘langage’, ‘langue’ et ‘parole’ afin d’évaluer les traductions proposées dans le Cours de linguistique générale par Baskin (1959) et par Harris (1983) ainsi que dans les volumes édités pas Harris, Komatsu et Wolf (1993, 1996, 1997).
Zusammenfassung
In dem Artikel geht es darum, in welchem Maße Saussure korrekt ins Englische übersetzt worden ist. Wir können u.a. feststellen, daß einige Markierungen von Ungewißheit ausgelassen sowie einige logische Satzstrukturen verändert worden sind. Dann befaßt sich der Beitrag mit der Übersetzung von Schlüsselwörtern wie ‘langage’, ‘langue’ und ‘parole’, um die Übersetzungen von Baskin (1959) und von Harris (1983) sowie die von Harris, Komatsu und Wolf herausgegebenen Bände (1993, 1996, 1997) genauer beurteilen zu können.
