Die Semantischen Kasustheorben von Louis Hjelmslev und Roman Jakobson und Ihre Herkunft

In den dreißiger Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts erarbeitete die strukturelle Linguistik Methoden für die sprachinterne, typologische und universalistische Forschung. Im Zentrum standen dabei Untersuchungen an je einem Sprachsystem, in diesem Beitrag wird jedoch den ‘allgemeinen Kasustheorien’ mit universalistischem Anspruch nachgegangen. Ausgangspunkt sind die Publikationen von Louis Hjelmslev (1899–1965) und Roman Jakobson (1896–1982). Beide Forscher beschrieben ‘Kasus’ in den dreißiger Jahren semantisch, indem sie unterschiedliche (aber kompatible) Mengen semantischer Merkmale ansetzten. Diese semantische, nicht morphologische Herangehensweise markierte den Beginn der Semantik der Grammatik.

Durant les années trente de notre siècle, la linguistique structurale a élaboré des méthodes permettant de procéder à des investigations explorant des aspects internes de la langue, à effectuer des recherches typologiques et à se pencher sur les universaux. Le domaine de prédilection était l’étude d’un système linguistique particulier. Cependant, l’objet de l’article actuel sera d’approfondir les théories générales des cas dans une optique universelle. Nous nous référerons aux travaux de Louis Hjelmslev (1899–1965) et de Roman Jakobson (1896–1982). Ces deux chercheurs ont fourni dans les années trente une définition sémantique du ‘cas’ en partant de séries distinctes – mais réciproquement compatibles – de traits sémantiques. Cette approche sémantique, non morphologique, marqua le point de départ de la ‘sémantique de la grammaire’.

In the 1930s, structural linguistics provided the framework for structural research on three levels: intralingual, interlingual and universal, with an emphasis on intralingual efforts. The paper, however, explains the notion of ‘general case theories’ advanced during these times. It uses the publications of Louis Hjelmslev (1899–1965) and Roman Jakobson (1896–1982) as a starting point. Both scholars describe the grammatical category ‘Case’ by semantic means, using different (but compatible) sets of semantic features. Their semantic rather than morphological approach initiated what we now call the ‘semantics of grammar’.
