This paper deals with the contributions to Hispanic Linguistics by the German-Chilean linguist Rodolfo Lenz (1863–1935), some of whose proposals – often attributed to other scholars – may be seen as an alternative to the ideas of the prestigious Andrés Bello (1781–1865). The paper first reviews those aspects of his work which anticipate some of the basic tenets of Functional Grammar, such as the notion of ‘transposition’ (function shifting), his views on sentential structure, and his treatment of passives as attributive constructions. The paper also explores Lenz’s contributions to Indo-European linguistics and his theoretical affinities with, if not anticipations of, the work of other well-known linguists like Búhler, Tesnière, Hjelmslev, and Benveniste. In sum, the author seeks to vindicate Rodolfo Lenz and his insightful views in both general linguistic theory and Spanish grammar.

Dans cet article on examine les contributions à la linguistique hispanique du linguiste germano-chilien Rodolfo Lenz (1863–1935), dont certaines propositions (souvent attribuées à d’autres chercheurs) peuvent être considerées comme des alternatives à celles du prestigieux Andrés Bello (1781–1865). On fait d’abord une revision des aspects de son oeuvre qui ont devancés certaines idées fondamentales de la Grammaire Fonctionnelle, telles qué le concept de ‘transposition’ (changement de fonctions), le concept de la structure orationnelle ou l’interprétation du passif comme construction attributive. On explore aussi la contribution de Lenz à la linguistique indo-européenne, ainsi que ses rapports théoriques avec d’éminents linguistes tels Rodolfo Lenz et ses remarquables intuitions dans la linguistique générale et la grammaire de l’espagnol.

In dem Artikel geht es um den Beitrag des deutsch-chilenischen Sprachwissenschaftlers Rodolfo Lenz (1863–1935) zur spanischen Linguistik. Manche seiner Vorschläge, welche oft genug anderen Wissenschaftlern zugeschrieben wurden, können als Alternativen zu den Ideen des berühmten Andrés Bello (1781–1865) angesehen werden. Zunächst wird auf jene Aspekte seines Werks eingegangen, welche Grundvorstellungen der Funktionellen Sprachwissenschaft vorwegnehmen, so der Begriff der ‘transposición’ (Funktionsveränderung), ferner seine Vorstellungen von der Satzstruktur sowie seine Interpretation von Passivbildungen als Attributivkonstruktionen. Ferner wird auf den Beitrag von Lenz zur indoeuropäischen Sprachwissenschaft, aber auch seine Verbindungen mit bedeutenden Sprachwissenschaftlern wie Karl Bühler, Lucien Tesnière, Louis Hjelmslev und Émile Benveniste eingegangen. Es geht also um eine gründliche Neueinschätzung von Rodolfo Lenz und seine Einsichten in Sprachtheorie und spanischer Grammatikographie.
