The beginnings of phonology in Italy

It is known that structural phonology (and, more generally, structural linguistics) began in Italy later than in other European countries. In the general opinion, this was due to the hegemony of Benedetto Croces’s philosophy during the years between World War I and his death in 1952. This paper shows how an early attempt to give a structural description of Italian phonology (Porru 1939) encountered an exceptionally harsh review (Pisani 1939), which appears to have been motivated more by personal and academic considerations than by philosophical or theoretical grounds. The authority of Pisani seemed to discourage any other attempt by Italian linguists to join European structuralism until about 1950. In fact, in that year two articles appeared (by no other than Pisani and by Devoto) which seemed to mark the end of a prohibition. The conclusion that may be drawn from this episode is that the development of sciences depends not only on general theoretical and cultural frames but also on actions and choices of individuals.

On sait que la phonologie structurale – et, en général, la linguistique structurale – en Italie s’est affirmée plus tard que dans d’autres pays européens. Selon l’opinion commune ce délai est une conséquence de l’hégémonie de la philosophie de Benedetto Croce jusqu’aux années cinquante. Cet article démontre comment un essai précoce (Porru 1939) de description structurale de la phonologie de l’italien provoqua un compte-rendu (Pisani 1939) exceptionellement sévère, fondé, il paraît, sur des argumentations personelles et académiques plus que scientifiques ou philosophiques. Il paraît que l’autorité de Vittorio Pisani aurait découragé les linguistes italiens à continuer sur ce chemin jusqu’au début des années cinquante. En effet, en 1950 deux articles (du même Pisani et de Giacomo Devoto) furent publiés, annonçant ainsi la fin d’une interdiction. On pourrait conclure de cette épisode que le développement des sciences et des idées ne dépend pas seulement de l’acceptation ou du rejet d’un cadre théorique, c’est-à-dire de la ‘nécessité’, mais aussi des choix des individus, à savoir de la ‘chance’.

Bekanntlich hat sich die strukturale Phonologie – und die strukturale Linguistik überhaupt – in Italien viel später als in anderen europäischen Ländern durchgesetzt. Es wird gemeinhin angenommen, daß diese Tatsache auf die Hegemonie von Benedetto Croces Philosophie in der Zeit zwischen dem ersten Weltkrieg und den 50er Jahren zurückzuführen sei. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird gezeigt, wie ein früher Versuch einer strukturalen Beschreibung der italienischen Phonologie (Porru 1939) eine aussergewöhnlich scharfe Ablehnung vonseiten des Indogermanisten Vittorio Pisani (1939) fand, die offenbar mehr persönliche und akademische Gründe als philosophische oder theoretische hatte. Pisanis Autorität scheint bis 1950 jeden weiteren italienischen Versuch unterbunden zu haben, den europäischen Strukturalismus zu rezipieren. In demselben Jahr 1950 erschienen zwei Artikel (von demselben Pisani und von Giacomo Devoto), welche das Ende eines Verbotes bedeuteten. Diese Episode läßt den Schluß zu, daß die Entwicklung einer Wissenschaft nicht nur von allgemeinen theoretischen und kulturellen Rahmenbedingungen abhängt, sondern auch von individuellen Handlungen und Entscheidungen.
