The Arte Sangley in the archives of the University of Santo Tomás in Manila

This article provides a brief description of a Hokkien grammar held in the Archives of the University of Santo Tomás in Manila which, as far as I am aware, has not been studied before. The article is only meant to provide a brief description of the Arte Sangley and some preliminary observations pending a more thorough study of the grammar. It contains some suggestions about its authorship and the date on which it was produced. It also compares, where appropriate and within the constraints of its limited scope, the Arte Sangley with the Arte de la lengua Chio Chu and Francisco Varo’s Arte de la lengua mandarina.

Cet article fournit une brève description d’une grammaire du hokkien qui se trouve dans les Archives de l’Université Santo Tomás à Manille et qui, autant que nous le sachions, n’a pour lors jamais été étudiée. Notre intention est seulement de présenter brièvement l’Arte Sangley et de soumettre quelques observations préliminaires, en attente d’un examen plus poussé. Nous faisons aussi des suggestions sur la paternité et la date de production. En outre, quand il est opportun et dans les limites imposées par le propos de cet article, nous comparons l’Arte Sangley avec l’Arte de la lengua Chio Chu et l’Arte de la lengua mandarina dû à Francisco Varo.

In diesem Artikel wird eine Grammatik der Hokkien-Sprache vorgestellt, die im Archiv der Universität von Santo Tomás in Manila aufbewahrt wird und bisher noch nicht untersucht worden ist. Der Artikel liefert eine kurze Beschreibung der Arte Sangley und beschränkt sich auf einige vorläufige Beobachtungen, als Vorbereitung für eine gründlichere Untersuchung der Grammatik. Nach einigen Hinweisen zu ihrer möglichen Urheberschaft sowie ihrem Entstehungsdatum wird die Arte Sangley mit der Arte de la lengua Chio Chu und der Arte de la lengua mandarina von Francisco Varo verglichen.
