José Monteiro's Vera, et unica praxis: A seventeenth-century Jesuit primer for the learning of Mandarin Chinese and a later version

Abstract
A manuscript written by the Portuguese Jesuit José Monteiro (1646–1720) and a later one by his French confrère
Jean-François Foucquet (1665–1741) shed new light on the didactic materials used in the China mission during the initial stage of
learning Chinese Mandarin as a second language. These manuscripts, which are written in Portuguese and romanised Mandarin, are the
only surviving copies we know of, although others have existed. This paper argues that the two documents prove the existence of an
earlier common model, even though they were written independently. This model lost to history circulated at least in the Fujian
Province from the late 17th century onwards. It was partly the result of the compilation of several earlier materials produced
since the beginning of the China mission, which had the same purpose of training new learners in the Chinese language. José
Monteiro’s document further reveals his intention to systematise the original version and disseminate his manual more widely
throughout the mission, probably by printing it.
Résumé
Un manuscrit rédigé par le jésuite portugais José Monteiro (1646–1720) et un autre, plus tardif, par son
confrère français Jean-François Foucquet (1665–1741) apportent un nouvel éclairage sur les matériaux didactiques utilisés lors de
la mission en Chine, au cours de la phase initiale de l’apprentissage du chinois mandarin comme langue seconde. Ces manuscrits,
rédigés en portugais et en mandarin romanisé, constituent les seules copies survivantes connues à ce jour, bien que d’autres aient
existé. Cet article soutient que ces deux documents témoignent de l’existence d’un modèle commun antérieur, bien qu’ils aient été
rédigés indépendamment. Ce modèle, aujourd’hui perdu pour l’histoire, a circulé au moins dans la province de Fujian à partir de la
fin du XVIIe siècle. Il était en partie le résultat de la compilation de plusieurs documents plus anciens produits depuis le début
de la mission en Chine, dans le but unique de former les missionnaires au chinois. Le manuscrit de José Monteiro révèle également
son intention de systématiser la version originale et de diffuser plus largement son manuel au sein de la mission, dans
l’intention probable de le faire imprimer.
Zusammenfassung
Ein Manuskript des portugiesischen Jesuiten José Monteiro (1646–1720) und ein späteres Manuskript seines
französischen Mitbruders Jean-François Foucquet (1665–1741) werfen ein neues Licht auf die Lehrmaterialien, die in der
Anfangsphase der China-Mission für das Erlernen von Mandarin-Chinesisch als Zweitsprache verwendet wurden. Die in portugiesischer
Sprache und romanisiertem Mandarin verfassten Manuskripte sind die einzigen Kopien, die erhalten geblieben sind, obwohl es noch
andere gegeben hat. In diesem Artikel wird die These vertreten, dass die beiden Texte auf die Existenz eines früheren gemeinsamen
Modells schließen lassen, obwohl sie unabhängig voneinander verfasst wurden. Das verlorene Modell zirkulierte ab dem Ende des 17.
Jahrhunderts auf jeden Fall in der Provinz Fujian. Zum Teil resultierte es aus der Zusammenstellung mehrerer früherer Materialien,
die seit Beginn der China-Mission mit dem gleichen Ziel erstellt wurden: Missionare in der chinesischen Sprache auszubilden. Aus
dem Manuskript von José Monteiro geht auch seine Absicht hervor, die Originalfassung zu systematisieren und während der Mission
weiter zu verbreiten, wahrscheinlich indem er beabsichtigte, den Text als Handbuch drucken zu lassen.
