The Place of Jakób Handel (1888–c.1942) in the History of Language Study in Poland

Summary
In this paper we examine the life and work of Jakób Handel (1888–c.1942), an underappreciated Polish-Jewish scholar whose interests ranged from comparative-historical linguistics and the history of linguistics to classical history and Jewish studies. Apart from printed publications, his contributions include various forms of outreach directed towards the Jewish community in Lviv (Ukrainian Львів [L'viv], Polish Lwów, German Lemberg). Based among others on the available records of his involvement in professional societies and the reviews of his books, we point to the reasons behind the relative lack of appreciation of his work among contemporary and later scholars despite its in-depth and original nature.
Résumé
Dans cet article, nous parcourons la vie et la carrière de Jakób Handel (1888–vers 1942), un érudit juif-polonais dont les domaines de spécialité étaient la linguistique historique et comparative, l’histoire de la linguistique, les études classiques ainsi que les études juives. Outre ses publications scientifiques, ses contributions comprennent également diverses formes de sensibilisation destinées à la communauté juive de Lviv (en ukrainien Львів [L'viv], en polonais Lwów, en allemand Lemberg). En nous fondant, entre autres pièces, sur les archives disponibles témoignant de son implication dans les milieux professionnels ainsi que sur les comptes rendus consacrés à ses textes, nous examinons les raisons pour lesquelles ses travaux ont été relativement peu reconnus par ses contemporains et ses successeurs, malgré leur profondeur et leur originalité.
Zusammenfassung
In diesem Aufsatz gehen wir auf Leben und Werk von Jakób Handel (1888 – um 1942) ein, einem unterschätzten polnisch-jüdischen Gelehrten, dessen Interessen von der historisch-vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft und der Geschichte der Sprachwissenschaft bis hin zur Alten Geschichte und Judaistik reichten. Zu Handels Beiträgen gehören außer einer Reihe von Publikationen verschiedene Formen der Kontaktaufnahme mit der jüdischen Gemeinschaft in Lemberg (ukrainisch Львів [L'viv], polnisch Lwów). Der Aufsatz beschäftigt sich, auf der Grundlage der verfügbaren Aufzeichnungen über Handels Engagement in Fachgesellschaften und der Rezensionen seiner Bücher, mit den Gründen dafür, dass seine Arbeiten sowohl unter zeitgenössischen als auch späteren Wissenschaftlern relativ wenig Anerkennung erhalten haben, trotz ihrer Tiefe und Originalität.
