En 1672 parut à Amsterdam, chez Abraham Wolfgang (1634–1694), une grammaire de l’italien rédigée en néerlandais. L’auteur de cette grammaire, publiée anonymement, peut être identifié comme Lodewijk Meijer (1629–1681). L’ouvrage, intitulé Italiaansche Spraakkonst, se caractérise par une organisation méthodique très explicite, qui se reflète dans la structuration rigide et systématique de la matière, dans l’emploi conséquent d’une terminologie bilingue (latin–néerlandais), dans la description, fort parallèle, des classes de mots, et dans l’application rigoureuse du principe de conformité structurelle (analogia en latin; gelijkvormigheidt en néerlandais). Construite sur une théorie de grammaire générale, l’Italiaansche Spraakkonst est une grammaire particulière de l’italien qui, tout en étant basée sur des sources livresques, fournit une description très complète et didactiquement adéquate. Le noyau de la grammaire est constitué par la description des classes de mots: celles-ci sont définies et décrites selon leur nature, leur sous-classification (formelle et sémantique) et leurs possibilités de combinaison. La théorie des parties du discours dans l’Italiaansche Spraakkonst est organisée autour du nom et du verbe, les deux classes de mots par rapport auxquelles les autres classes sont définies. La présente étude s’ouvre par une mise en contexte historiographique de la grammaire italienne de L. Meijer. Ensuite, la démarche méthodologique et la terminologie déployées dans l’ouvrage sont au centre de l’analyse. L’examen de l’organisation de la matière grammaticale procède de l’articulation globale des classes de mots à l’étude de deux classes, à savoir l’article et l’adnomen (néerlandais: bynaam), ce dernier terme désignant chez Meijer l’ensemble des éléments adjectivaux. Le fait d’avoir érigé les adnomina en une classe de mots autonome constitue un des apports les plus remarquables de ce grammairien, philosophe et ami de Spinoza (1632–1677), qui s’inscrit dans le courant du rationalisme post-cartésien.
Summary
In 1672, an Italian grammar written in Dutch was printed by Abraham Wolfgang (1634–1694) in Amsterdam. The author of the grammar, published anonymously, can be identified as Lodewijk Meijer (1629–1681). His work, the Italiaansche Spraakkonst, displays a particularly explicit methodical organisation, which is reflected in the rigid and systematic presentation of the grammatical material, a consistent use of bilingual (Latin–Dutch) terminology, a highly parallel description of the word classes, and a rigorous application of the principle of structural conformity (analogia in Latin, gelijkvormigheidt in Dutch). Written in the framework of general and philosophical grammar, the Italiaansche Spraakkonst is conceived as a particular grammar of the Italian language which, though based on bookish sources, provides a very complete and didactically adequate description. The word classes form the core of the grammar: they are defined and described according to their nature, their (formal and semantic) subcategorisation and their possible combinations. The theory of the parts of speech is organised around two word classes, the noun and the verb, in relation to which all the other classes are defined. This paper sketches the historiographical context of L. Meijer’s Italiaansche Spraakkonst, followed by an analysis of the methodology and terminology used in this work. Next, we investigate the organisation of the grammar by giving a global overview of the word classes, before proceeding to a more detailed analysis of two particular classes, the article and the adnomen (Dutch: bynaam), the latter referring to all types of adjectival forms. The positing of the adnomina as an autonomous word class is one of the most remarkable contributions of Lodewijk Meijer, a philosopher and friend of Spinoza (1632–1677), and a figure representative of post-Cartesian rationalism.
Zusammenfassung
1672 wurde bei Abraham Wolfgang (1634–1694) in Amsterdam eine auf Niederländisch verfasste Grammatik veröffentlicht. Den Verfasser dieser anonymen Grammatik hat man als Lodewijk Meijer (1629–1681) identifiziert. Seine Italiaansche Spraakkonst kennzeichnet sich durch einen expliziten methodischen Aufbau, der sich manifestiert in der genauen und systematischen Bearbeitung der sprachlichen Materialien, der konsequenten Verwendung einer zweisprachigen Terminologie (Latein–Niederländisch), der parallelen Beschreibung der unterschiedenen Wortarten und der rigorosen Anwendung des Prinzips struktureller Gleichförmigkeit (lat. analogia; niederl. gelijkvormigheidt). Die Italiaansche Spraakkonst hat ihre Wurzeln in der Theorie der allgemeinen und philosophischen Grammatik und ist als eine besondere Grammatik der italienischen Sprache konzipiert. Obwohl sie auf gedruckten Quellen basiert, bietet sie eine vollständige und didaktisch adäquate Beschreibung. Den Kern der Grammatik bilden die Wortarten. Diese werden nach ihrer Natur, ihrer formalen und semantischen Subkategorisierung sowie ihren Kombinationsmöglichkeiten definiert und beschrieben. Die Theorie der Redeteile baut auf zwei Wortarten auf, Nomen und Verbum, und die weiteren Wortarten werden im Hinblick auf diese beiden Wortarten definiert. Der vorliegende Aufsatz skizziert zunächst den historiographischen Kontext von L. Meijers Italiaansche Spraakkonst. Anschließend werden die Methodologie und die Terminologie seiner Grammatik analysiert. Danach folgen eine Übersicht der Wortarten und eine detaillierte Analyse von zwei Wortarten: das Geschlechtswort und das adnomen (niederl. bynaam). Das adnomen ist eine Wortart, die alle Typen von Adjektiven umfasst. Ihre Darstellung als selbständige Wortart ist eine der wichtigsten Beiträge L. Meijers, der ein Philosoph, ein Freund Spinozas (1632–1677) und ein Vertreter des postcartesianischen Rationalismus war.
