En 2006 et 2007 les coÛts croissants des services de traduction et d’interprétation dans le secteur public ont fait de nouveau l’objet de débats. Il a même été suggéré que de telles prestations offertes à la population immigrée nuisait à la cohésion sociale et représentaient des mesures désincitatives à l’acquisition de la langue anglaise. Le présent article s’intéresse à ce débat dans le contexte des politiques linguistiques du Royaume-Uni et du monolinguisme et par rapport à la construction discursive de l’identité et s’interroge sur le rôle de la traductologie dans ce débat.
