Abstract
The present study, following a sequential mixed-methods design, mainly aims at determining the possible predictors
of translation performance in reading emotions, regulation of emotion, and translation involvement. In so doing, a sample of 114
homogeneous university students majoring in English translation participated in the quantitative part of the study and a pool of
eight students participated in the qualitative part of the study. A number of instruments were used to measure the variables. The
results confirmed that reading emotions, emotion regulation, and translation involvement were positively correlated with
translation performance. Moreover, the results showed that emotion regulation made the strongest contribution to explaining
translation performance. After calculating the inter-coder reliability of the common themes that emerged from the responses to the
interviews, the results revealed eight themes, including focused attention, interest, higher motivation, effective feedback,
engagement, fun, management of emotions, and interaction. Finally, some implications are offered for translation teachers and
students.
Résumé
La présente étude, suivant un plan séquentiel à méthodes mixtes, vise principalement à déterminer les
facteurs prédictifs potentiels de la performance en traduction, en lien avec les émotions de lecture, la régulation émotionnelle
et l’implication dans la traduction. Un échantillon homogène de 114 étudiants universitaires spécialisés en traduction anglaise a
participé à la partie quantitative de l’étude, tandis qu’un groupe de huit étudiants a été impliqué dans la partie qualitative.
Plusieurs instruments ont été utilisés pour mesurer les variables. Les résultats ont confirmé que les émotions de lecture, la
régulation émotionnelle et l’implication dans la traduction étaient positivement corrélées à la performance en traduction. En
outre, ils ont montré que la régulation émotionnelle était le facteur le plus déterminant pour expliquer cette performance. Après
avoir calculé la fiabilité inter-codeurs des thèmes communs ressortis des réponses aux entretiens, huit thèmes ont été
identifiés : l’attention focalisée, l’intérêt, une motivation accrue, un retour efficace, l’engagement, le plaisir, la gestion des
émotions et l’interaction. Enfin, quelques implications sont proposées à l’intention des enseignants et des étudiants en
traduction.
