Market demand for conference interpreting
Key factors affecting recruiting decisions in South Korea

Abstract
This study explored market demand for conference interpreting in South Korea, focusing on clients’ views on the
key factors that affect their recruiting decisions. The study conducted a semi-structured interview using fictitious resumes with
14 participants who are clients of conference interpreting services. The study’s results indicate that: (1) participants place
high importance on interpreting quality, particularly emphasizing quality items such as content accuracy and terminology
awareness; (2) domain-specific interpreting experience, academic background, and price serve as important quality signals in their
recruiting decision-making; and (3) price-quality association is present. Furthermore, the interview results suggest that a
collaborative approach from clients is necessary to create an enabling environment for quality interpreting services. Ultimately,
this study presents noteworthy information regarding clients’ rationales for their recruitment criteria. This information is
expected to widen our understanding of the interpreting market in South Korea.
Résumé
Le présent article étudie la demande du marché sud-coréen de l’interprétation de conférence, en se
concentrant sur le point de vue des clients et sur les éléments-clés influençant leurs choix lors des recrutements. Un entretien
semi-directif, basé sur des CV fictifs, a été mené auprès de 14 utilisateurs de services d’interprétation de conférence.
Les résultats de l’étude montrent que : (1) les participants accordent une grande importance à la qualité de la
prestation, et portent notamment une attention particulière sur l’exactitude du contenu et les connaissances
terminologiques de l’interprète ; (2) les expériences d’interprétation dans un domaine spécifique, le parcours
universitaire ou le prix s’avèrent être des critères déterminants dans la prise de décision des recruteurs ; (3) le
rapport qualité-prix est souvent pris en compte. En outre, les résultats de l’entretien suggèrent qu’une approche
collaborative de la part des clients est nécessaire pour créer un environnement propice à des services d’interprétation de
qualité. Enfin, cet article apporte des informations importantes concernant les raisonnements des clients concernant leurs
critères de recrutement. Ces informations devraient élargir notre compréhension du marché sud-coréen de
l’interprétation.
