The effect of memory training on consecutive interpreting performance by interpreter trainees

Abstract
The present study investigates the effect of memory training on the quality of interpreting by Farsi-to-English interpreter trainees, with special attention to diminishing the rate of omission of message elements. Participants were assigned to two groups on the basis of their overall performance on a TOEFL test, with equal division between genders. The control group was taught interpreting skills by the routine curriculum, while the experimental, group spent part of the time on memory training exercises, e.g. imagination and story retelling. Three raters assessed the accuracy of interpreting, omissions, additions, grammar, expression, terminology, pace and accentuation in the trainees’ pre-test and post-test performance. Statistical analysis shows that the memory training had a positive effect on the quality of interpreting, particularly so on decreasing the omission rate. The results have implications for curriculum designers of interpreting programs, material producers and all who are involved in interpreting studies and its pedagogy.

Cette étude examine l’effet de l’entraînement de la mémoire sur la qualité de l’interprétation du farsi à l’anglais par des stagiaires notamment sur la diminution du tau x d’omissions. Les participants ont été assignés à deux groupes sur la base de leur performance globale lors d’un test TOEFL, avec une répartition égale entre les sexes. Le groupe de contrôle a reçu le programme de routine, tandis que le groupe expérimental a passé une partie du temps sur des exercices d’entraînement de la mémoire, p. ex. l’imagination et le récit d'histoires. Trois juges ont estimé l’exactitude de l’interprétation, les omissions, les additions, la grammaire, l’expression, la terminologie, la vitesse d’élocution et l’accentuation produit par les stagiaires interprètes lors le pré-test et le post-test. L’analyse statistique montre que l’entraînement de la mémoire a eu un effet positif sur la qualité de l’interprétation et sur la diminution du taux d’omissions. Les résultats ont des implications pour les concepteurs de programmes d’études les programmes d’entraînement d’interprètes, les producteurs de matériaux et tous ceux qui sont impliqués dans l’interprétation des études et de sa pédagogie.
