Communicating in multilingual churches

The interpreter’s role as a case study

Abstract
This paper aims to expand the boundaries of public service interpreting and translation (PSIT) and map the still widely unexplored territory of translating and interpreting in ecclesiastical settings. The starting point is the consideration that 21st-century societies are shaped by cross-cultural contact and interaction because of migration flows. Consequently, parishes are culturally and linguistically diverse. In such a context, translation and interpreting services are of utmost importance to ensure the integration of parishioners and preachers in the religious community. I intend to explore some of the realities, needs, and challenges posed by interpreting in ecclesiastical settings in Spain. A mainly qualitative methodology based on discourse analysis is used. Data come from empirical studies on related topics, an open questionnaire, and observation. The study touches on issues relating to the specific communication needs and audience expectations in religious settings, the context dependency of ecclesiastical translation and interpreting, and the interpreter’s role(s) of the interpreter in the religious environment.
Résumé
Cet article vise à élargir les frontières de l’interprétation et de la traduction de service public (ISTP) et à cartographier le territoire encore largement inexploré de la traduction et de l’interprétation en milieu ecclésiastique. Le point de départ est la considération que les sociétés du 21ème siècle sont façonnées par des contacts et des interactions interculturels en raison des flux migratoires. Par conséquent, les paroisses sont culturellement et linguistiquement diverses. Dans un tel contexte, les services de traduction et d’interprétation sont de la plus haute importance pour assurer l’intégration des paroissiens et des prédicateurs dans la communauté religieuse. J’ai l’intention d’explorer certaines des réalités, des besoins et des défis posés par l’interprétation dans les milieux ecclésiastiques en Espagne. Une méthodologie principalement qualitative basée sur l’analyse du discours est utilisée. Les données proviennent d’études empiriques sur des sujets connexes, d’un questionnaire ouvert et de l’observation. L’étude aborde les questions relatives aux besoins de communication spécifiques et aux attentes du public dans les milieux religieux, la dépendance au contexte de la traduction et de l’interprétation ecclésiastiques, et le(s) rôle(s) de l’interprète dans le milieu religieux.
