Ancient languages and algorithms

Historical linguistics has experienced an upsurge in methodological innovation. However, owing to the constraints of contemporary publication, these innovations often appear in print in a format which is technical, dense and less than fully accessible. Moreover, because these innovations are still young and have often arisen in other fields before being translated to historical linguistics, our own discipline has yet to accumulate a stock of trusted explanations of them, presented lucidly and addressed specifically to our field and to its scientific concerns. This special issue is dedicated to promoting the accessibility of new methods. Despite their technical details, most new methods in historical linguistics rest upon a rationale and an essential logic that are perfectly comprehensible to interested historical linguists, so long as they are communicated in a fashion that is sympathetic and respectful to a linguistic audience. This introduction contextualizes the five papers of the special issue.

La linguistique historique a récemment connu une recrudescence d’innovations méthodologiques, mais en raison des contraintes de la publication scientifique, ces innovations paraissent souvent dans un langage technique, dense et peu accessible. De plus, parce que ces innovations sont encore récentes et sont souvent apparues dans d’autres domaines avant leur adaptation à la linguistique historique, notre discipline doit encore accumuler à leur sujet un ensemble de descriptions et d’explications, présentées avec clarté et visant spécifiquement notre domaine et ses préoccupations scientifiques. Ce numéro spécial est dédié à la promotion de l’accessibilité de ces nouvelles méthodes. Malgré leurs détails techniques, la plupart des nouvelles méthodes en linguistique historique reposent sur des principes de logique fondamentaux et sont parfaitement compréhensibles pour les spécialistes en diachronie s’y intéressant, à condition qu’elles soient communiquées d’une manière adaptée à un public de linguistes. Cette introduction contextualise les cinq principaux articles de ce numéro spécial.

Die historische Linguistik erlebt einen Aufschwung methodischer Innovationen. Aufgrund der Zwänge der heutigen Veröffentlichungspraxis erscheinen diese Innovationen jedoch häufig in gedruckter Form in einem Format, das technisch, inhaltlich dicht und nur schwer zugänglich ist. Da diese Innovationen noch jung sind und oft in anderen Bereichen entstanden sind, bevor sie in die historische Linguistik übertragen wurden, fehlt unserer eigenen Disziplin ein Bestand an vertrauenswürdigen Erklärungen, die klar präsentiert und speziell auf unser Fachgebiet und seine wissenschaftlichen Anliegen zugeschnitten sind. Dieses Sonderheft widmet sich der Förderung der Zugänglichkeit neuer Methoden. Trotz ihrer technischen Details basieren die meisten neuen Methoden in der historischen Linguistik auf einer rationalen Begründung und einer grundlegenden Logik, die für interessierte historische Linguisten vollkommen verständlich sind, solange sie auf eine Weise kommuniziert werden, die für ein sprach­wissenschaftliches Publikum ansprechend und entgegenkommend ist. Diese Einleitung kontextualisiert die fünf Hauptbeiträge der Sonderausgabe.
