Insubordination and what happens after it

One of the sources of irrealis markers is former markers of conditional sentences, both protases and apodoses, both factual and counterfactual. The development, amply documented cross-linguistically, is that of insubordination: a former marker of subordination is used as an irrealis marker in main clauses. However, the next stage of development is not commonly observed: when irrealis markers that came into being as the result of insubordination and are used in main clauses spread back to their original locus, conditional sentences. The paper deals with a clear attestation of this pattern in Hittite, an extinct Indo-European language. It is argued that the development is part of a linguistic cycle of the ‘broken’ kind, i.e., that the cycle changed by other processes simultaneously operating in the language.

L’une des sources des marqueurs grammaticaux d’irréalité est constituée d’anciens marqueurs de phrases conditionnelles : tant protases qu’apodoses, tant factuelles que contrefactuelles. Ce développement morphosyntaxique est celui de l’insubordination : un ancien marqueur de subordination s’utilise comme marqueur irréel dans la proposition indépendante. Le développement ainsi que l’utilisation ultérieure de ces marqueurs sont amplement documentés dans les langues du monde. Cependant, l’étape suivante du développement ne s’observe pas couramment : celle lorsque les marqueurs irréels qui ont vu le jour suite à l’insubordination et qui sont utilisés dans la proposition indépendante se propagent à leur emploi d’origine – celui dans les phrases conditionnelles. L’article traite d’une attestation claire de cette situation en hittite, une langue indo-européenne morte. On soutient que ce développement relève du cycle linguistique du type “cassé”, c’est-à-dire modifié par d’autres processus qui se déroulent simultanément dans la langue.

Eine der Quellen für Irrealis-Marker sind frühere Marker von Konditionalsätzen – sowohl Protasen als auch Apodosen, sowohl sachliche als auch kontrafaktische. Die Entwicklung ist die der Insubordination – ein früherer Unterordnungsmarker wird in Hauptsätzen als Irrealis-Marker verwendet. Die Entwicklung und die anschließende Nutzung sind sprachübergreifend ausführlich dokumentiert. Die nächste Entwicklungsstufe wird jedoch nicht häufig beobachtet: wenn Irrealis-Marker, die als Ergebnis von Insubordination entstanden sind und in Hauptsätzen verwendet werden, zu ihrem ursprünglichen Ort – Konditionalsätzen – zurückgreifen. Ziel des Aufsatzes ist der Nachweis dieses Musters im Hethitischen, einer ausgestorbenen indogermanischen Sprache. Es wird argumentiert, dass es sich bei der Entwicklung um einen Sprachzyklus der „gebrochenen“ Art handelt, d. h. dass der Zyklus durch andere gleichzeitig in der Sprache ablaufende Prozesse verändert wurde.
