Breaking, Ambisyllabicity, and the Sonority Hierarchy in Old English

SUMMARY Following Howell (1991), Jones (1989), and Lutz (1991) in assuming that Old English breaking constituted a weakening of certain coda segments, this paper advances a unitary account of the complex of conditions imposed on the change on the basis of the interplay of ambisyllabicity, sonority value, and segmental properties involved. Ambisyllabicity provides otherwise onset segments with a necessary status of coda by virtue of resyllabification, whereby a stressed syllable attracts an onset of the following unstressed syllable onto itself. Sonority value determines the degree of restriction in regard to coda internal position in effecting breaking; the less sonorous /h/ and /w/ are subject to weakening in more extensive context. Difference in segmental properties motivates the extent to which the breaking triggers are influenced by adjacent segments; the greater labiality/velarity inherent in HI (as against /r/) and /w/ (as against /h/) makes them more vulnerable to assimilatory effects of neighboring segments. RÉSUMÉ Cet article, comme ceux de Howell (1991), Jones (1989) et Lutz (1991), appuie la supposition que la rupture dans le vieil anglais constitue un affaiblissement de certains segments de la coda. On y propose une explication unitaire basée sur l'interaction de l'ambisyllabicité, de la valeur sonore et des propriétés segmentates en question. Par un processus de resyllabification, où une syllabe accentuée s'approprie l'attaque de la syllabe non-accentuée suivante, l'ambisyllabicité attribue un statut de coda à des segments qui autrement n'auraient rempli qu'une simple position d'attaque. La valeur sonore détermine le degré de restriction relatif à la position interne de la coda affectant la rupture; le /h/ et le /w/, étant moins sonores, sont sujets à un affaiblissement dans un contexte plus vaste. Les différences de propriétés segmentales établissent jusqu'à quel point les déclencheurs de ruptures sont influencés par leurs segments adjacents; la labialité/velarité plus forte qui est inhérente à /l/ (en contraste avec /r/) et à /w/ (en contraste avec /h/) les rend plus vulnérables aux effets des segments avoisinants. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG In Anlehnung an die Annahme, daß die altenglische Brechung sich als Ko-daschwächungsprozeB darstelle, wie Howell (1991), Jones (1989) und Lutz (1991) vorgeschlagen haben, legt diese Arbeit eine einheitliche Erklärung des Bedingungsgefüges dieses Prozesses vor. Ihr zufolge läßt sich dieser Komplex als Ergebnis des Zusammenspiels von Ambisyllabizität, Sonoritàtsgrad und einigen segmentalen Eigenschaften verstehen. Die Ambisyllabizitât bewirkt, daB durch Resyllabierung ein Ansatzkonsonant der nachfolgenden unbetonten Silbe auch als Kodakonsonant der vorausgehenden betonten Silbe zählt. Der Grad der Sonoritat bestimmt den Grad der Einschränkung in Bezug auf Koda-positionen, die Schwachung bzw. Brechung herbeiführen. Daraus folgt, daß /h/ und /w/, die einen geringeren Sonoritätsgrad als /r/ und /l/ haben, in exten-siverem Kontext einer größeren Schwachung unterliegen. Der Unterschied zwischen segmentalen Eigenschaften bedingt das MaB, nach dem die bre-chungserzeugenden Konsonanten von benachbarten Segmenten beeinfluBt werden; die größere Labialität bzw.Velariat, die /l/ (gegenüber /r/) und /w/ (gegenüber /h/) eigen sind, machen sie mehr empfanglich flir durch benach-barte Segmente hervorgerufene Assimilationsprozesse.
