Rebracketing (Gliederungsverschiebung) and the Early Merge Principle

Abstract
The concept of Gliederungsverschiebung (rebracketing) was introduced by the Neogrammarians and it is probably the first explanation of syntactic change proper. Originally, it was conceived of to explain the emergence of the complementizer dass “that”, which was held to go back to a demonstrative pronoun that refers cataphorically to a following main clause and which was eventually reanalyzed as introducing the second clause. This paper presents several examples of rebracketing (mainly from various stages of German) and argues that rebracketing is only possible if the clause whose boundary is shifted is embedded under and selected by a lexical head that is eventually reanalyzed as a complementizer. This condition on rebracketing follows from the fact that otherwise, the respective clause would be a phase and no longer accessible for operations from outside (thus excluding rebracketing). Additionally, the paper argues that rebracketing is economy-driven in that it minimizes the structure and it is motivated by the Principle of Early Merge that applies whenever no further movement follows.
Résumé
Le concept de Gliederungsverschiebung (Fausse coupe) fut introduit dans le domaine de la syntaxe par les Néogrammairiens et représente probablement la première tentative d’expliquer le changement syntaxique. À l’origine cette notion fut conçue afin d’expliquer l’émergence de la conjonction dass, dont on supposait qu’elle était issue d’un pronom démonstratif. Selon les Néogrammairiens ce pronom remplaçait en cataphore la proposition suivante, et fut ultérieurement réanalysé en tant conjonction introduisant ladite proposition. Cet article présente plusieurs exemples de fausse coupe (surtout de l’allemand) et propose que ce changement n’est possible que si la proposition dont on déplace la limite est le complément d’une tête lexicale par laquelle elle est sélectionnée. Cette condition sur ces fausses coupes en syntaxe découle du fait qu’autrement la proposition en question serait une phase et – par conséquent – ne serait plus accessible de l’extérieur. En outre, l’article propose que ce changement serait poussé par l’économie (economy driven) et motivé par le principe de Early Merge qui s’applique quand d’autres mouvements ne suivent pas.
Zusammenfassung
Das Konzept der Gliederungsverschiebung (rebracketing) wurde von den Junggrammatikern vorgeschlagen und ist wahrscheinlich der erste Erklärungsversuch für genuinen Syntaxwandel. Ursprünglich war Gliederungsverschiebung gedacht als Erklärung für die Entstehung des Komplementierers dass, von dem man annahm, dass er zurückgeht auf ein Demonstrativpronomen, das kataphorisch auf einen folgenden zweiten Hauptsatz verweist und das schließlich als Komplementierer des zweiten Satzes reanalysiert wurde. Der vorliegende Aufsatz präsentiert mehrere Beispiele dafür (überwiegend aus dem Deutschen) und argumentiert dafür, dass Gliederungsverschiebung nur dann möglich ist, wenn der Satz, dessen Grenze dabei verschoben wird, eingebettet ist unter sowie selegiert wird von einem lexikalischen Kopf, der schließlich als Komplementierer reanalysiert wird. Diese Beschränkung für Gliederungsverschiebung ergibt sich aus der Tatsache, dass andernfalls der entsprechende Satz eine Phase und damit nicht mehr weiter zugänglich für weitere Operationen von außen wäre (was Gliederungsverschiebung ausschließen würde). Zusätzlich wird dafür argumentiert, dass Gliederungsverschiebung ökonomiegetrieben ist, da sie die syntaktische Struktur minimiert, und dass sie durch das Early Merge Principle motiviert ist, das in Fällen greifen kann, in denen keine weitere Bewegung mehr erfolgt.
