Abstract
A study of L2 development stages of causal connectives in American students’ written Chinese
This paper is a study of the causal text markers collected from beginning, intermediate and advanced learners. It finds through statistical investigation that English-speaking learners’ acquisition of Chinese causal connectives appears to follow a nonlinear path, and the common meanings in both languages can be learned at the early stage. Beginners are inclined to use the postposition of the causal connectives as they are much more affected by the word order of their native language. Intermediate learners appear to use a multitude of word items; i.e., there is an increase in the phenomenon of one versus multiple and multiples versus one from the native language, and learners are prone to mistakenly transferring a semantic field from the native language with a relatively wider scope to the corresponding words of the target language. Advanced learners are increasingly close to native speakers in using causal connectives, but the fossilization phenomenon appears frequently.
