Abstract
Survey research on teaching Classical Chinese as L2 in the U.S.
This paper is a survey research study conducted on 144 students of classical Chinese in 11 universities in the United States. The survey investigates the students’ language background, their modern Chinese proficiency level, motivation of study, self-evaluation of learning results, and their opinions on issues in teaching classical Chinese as L2. These issues include the materials and format of textbooks, instructional language and pedagogy. This study is the first large-scale inter-university investigation on the teaching of classical Chinese in the U.S., and provides statistical data and suggestions from the students’ perspective for the future development of the CSL field. Analysis of the survey results shows that there has been a critical change in student demographics in the past twenty years and the students’ opinions on some controversial topics in the field sometimes diverge from those of the teachers.
