Abstract
Perception of Mandarin tones: Effects of high-variability stimuli
This study aims to investigate how learners of atonal languages perceive Mandarin’s four tones through an approach named
“high-variability stimuli,” and compares the method with the traditional method of teaching by imitation. The subjects are from
two classes of Grade 7 students who learn Mandarin in a public high school in Australia. Students listened to Mandarin
monosyllabic sounds pronounced by different male, female, young, and old speakers. After being trained by the “high-variability
stimuli” approach plus a low-level pitch for tone 3, the experimental class improved markedly in identifying tones 2 and 3 in the
post-test, compared to a control class and pre-test results. At the same time the experimental class demonstrated a significant
decrease in tone pair confusions of 2 vs. 3 as well as 3 vs. 4. In this paper, the researchers also point out possible factors
that might affect the above results.
