Abstract
From Understanding to Appreciation: A Discussion on Aesthetic Reading and Translation Exercises in Advanced Chinese Classrooms in the AI Era
This article, drawing on Kantian aesthetics, distinguishes between the determining judgment and the reflective
judgment in the process of reading. It argues that aesthetic reading should prioritize the pursuit of non-utilitarian pleasure through the
free appreciation of linguistic forms, an experience that artificial intelligence cannot replicate. The article also addresses the
difficulties of engaging in aesthetic reading through translation and advocates leveraging AI’s capacities for comprehension and expression.
Through the comparative study of multilingual texts, students can deepen their understanding of the distinct features of the Chinese
language and, on this foundation, develop an appreciation for Chinese literary works.
