Abstract
CSL in the AI Era: Exploring and Reflecting on Game-Enhanced Cultural Instruction for Advanced Chinese Learners
In recent years, the rapid development and widespread use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly
Generative AI technologies based on Large Language Models, have brought significant changes and challenges to Second Language
Education, including Chinese as a Second Language (CSL). These changes are not limited to advancements in technology but also
involve a deeper integration and sometimes a clash of educational philosophies and teaching methodologies. This article uses a
game-informed and game-enhanced CSL course as a case study to explore the evolving roles of teachers and classrooms in the age of
AI. It argues that while AI enables data-driven and personalized learning, the roles of teachers and classrooms remain
irreplaceable in the authentic teaching and transmission of culture. Crucial components of cultural education — such as fostering
critical thinking, facilitating discussions about cultural meanings, and creating emotional and intellectual connections between
teachers and students — still exceed the current capabilities of AI. In this context, the course adopts a dual approach, combining
“Gameful Pedagogy” with “Game-Enhanced” course content to deliver cultural learning experiences that cannot be replicated by AI
systems. This game-based teaching model not only offers students personalized and diverse learning pathways but also integrates
teacher-guided “experiential learning” and “critical reflection” to deepen their understanding of the target culture. It pushes
students beyond a superficial understanding of cultural knowledge, encouraging them to engage more meaningfully with the richness
of cultural products and practices while critically examining the broader cultural perspectives that shape these elements. In the
face of rapid advancements in AI, this human-centered, interaction-rich, and experience-driven teaching approach provides a vital
pathway for innovation and progress in CSL cultural education.
