Abstract
Discourse roles of declaratives: Opener, messenger, supplier of dispute source, and terminator
In social interaction, a discourse (both oral and written) unfolds with a beginning, and then develops and concludes. The beginning, development and conclusion of discourse have been well delved into within the frameworks of discourse analysis and typological studies, and fruitful results have been made. In syntactic theory, declarative is a grammatical phenomenon, whose grammatical structure and meaning are the main foci in studies of grammar. However, the functions of declaratives to begin, develop, and conclude a discourse are rarely talked about. This paper builds on grammatical features of declaratives to investigate the discourse roles of declarative clauses from the perspective of discourse semantics; and explore the generation mechanism of these roles as well as their contribution to the strategies of discourse organization. This study hopes to shed some light on research on the discourse roles of different clause types.
