Abstract
The information response token zhende ma/a in Chinese spontaneous conversation
Syntactically speaking, 真的吗/啊 zhende ma/a ‘really?’ is a polar interrogative. However, in
spontaneous conversation, it serves as a question about the authenticity of the information and as a response token. This article
analyses the functions of zhende ma/a in conversation sequences from the perspective of interactional
linguistics. It is found that zhende ma/a expressions are news-markers. That is to say, speakers convey that they
are informed of a situation that is new or contrary to their background knowledge and are therefore surprised. In terms of the
conversation structure, zhende ma/a displays the recipient’s alignment with the telling activity and encourages
the prior speaker to continue their talk.
