Abstract
This short paper outlines some research in logic and pragmatics that sheds interesting light on the concept of similarity. A recent proposal (Sovran 1992) suggests that there are two basic kinds of similarity: divergent and convergent. These seem to be directly relevant to how we conceptualize equivalence in Translation Studies and in Contrastive Analysis, respectively.
