Negation and Translation

Abstract In the last few years considerable attention has been paid to the system of negation; nevertheless, the study of negative polarity has not been conducted from the perspective of translation. This paper concentrates on some of the problems that the translation of some English negatives may pose for Spanish speakers. It starts by showing the ambiguity of some negative constructions in English as well as the contradictions that may be detected between the syntactic, semantic and even pragmatic levels of the language in regard to polarity. It then goes on to examine the scope of negation in both English and Spanish as well as its implications in the field of translation. This section also includes a careful analysis of the negation of English auxiliaries and of the so called transferred or raised negative constructions. Part three is concerned with double negation in both standard and non-standard English while four deals with the definition and anticipated difficulties in the translation of negative polarity idioms (NPIDs). The paper concludes by making a series of considerations on the realm of translation in light of the issues discussed before. Questions for further study in the area of the translation of negatives are also briefly mentioned. Résumé Ces dernières années, on a prêté une grande attention au système de la négation; cependant, l'étude de la polarité négative n'a pas été abordée du point de vue de la traduction. Notre travail concerne quelques problèmes posés aux hispanophones par la traduction de certaines constructions négatives anglaises. Nous voulons démontrer en premier lieu l'ambiguïté de quelques constructions négatives en anglais ainsi que les contradictions qu'on peut déceler entre les niveaux syntactique, sémantique et même pragmatique du langage en ce qui concerne la polarité. Ensuite, nous examinons le domaine de la négation en anglais et en espagnol, ainsi que ses implications pour la traduction. Cette section inclut l'analyse détaillée de la négation des auxiliaires anglais et des négations dites transférées. Dans la troisième partie, nous nous occupons de la double négation en anglais standard et sous-standard, et dans la dernière nous abordons la définition des modismes à polarité négative (MPNs) et les difficultés qui se présentent lors de leur traduction. Notre travail se termine par une série de considérations sur la traduction à la lumière des questions étudiées antérieurement. Nous abordons aussi brièvement d'autres aspects qui mériteraient une étude postérieure dans le cadre des constructions négatives.
