Abstract
Increasing attention is devoted to translators’ job satisfaction (JS), evaluations, and emotions concerning one’s
work. Given the complex and interdisciplinary nature of JS, an explorative overview of how the concept has been approached in
translation studies is sorely needed. Drawing on a corpus of 51 articles (1998–2021), we analyze the theoretical backgrounds,
methods and populations in order to present a comprehensive view on the theoretical and methodological approaches to translators’
JS. The theoretical approaches can mainly be divided into psychological, psycho-sociological, sociological, and ergonomic. We
assess the application and relevance of the approaches, drawing attention to how only a few established psychological theories
have so far been used. Methodologically, most studies rely on survey data analyzed quantitatively, concerning translators with a
particular specialization or mode of employment. Looking ahead, the topic would benefit from a conceptual analysis of JS and
related concepts, as well as further exploration of established psychological theories and validated quantitative instruments. At
the same time, we see a call for qualitative, interventive, and conceptual studies and for critical reflection on studying
translators’ JS.
Résumé
La satisfaction au travail (SAT) des traducteurs, ainsi que leurs évaluations et les émotions liées à leur
activité professionnelle, attirent de plus en plus l’attention. Étant donné la nature complexe et interdisciplinaire de la SAT, un
aperçu exploratoire de la manière dont ce concept a été abordé en traductologie s’avère urgent. En analysant un corpus de 51
articles (1998–2021), nous examinons les cadres théoriques, les méthodes et les populations étudiées afin de fournir une vision
d’ensemble des approches théoriques et méthodologiques relatives à la SAT des traducteurs. Les cadres théoriques peuvent être
principalement classés en approches psychologiques, psycho-sociologiques, sociologiques et ergonomiques. Nous évaluons
l’application et la pertinence de ces approches, en soulignant que seules quelques théories psychologiques établies ont été
utilisées jusqu’à présent. Sur le plan méthodologique, la majorité des études s’appuient sur des enquêtes quantitatives, ou se
concentrent sur des traducteurs aux spécialisations ou aux profils d’emploi spécifiques. À l’avenir, la discipline pourrait
bénéficier d’une analyse conceptuelle de la SAT et des concepts associés, ainsi que d’une exploration approfondie des théories
psychologiques établies et des outils quantitatifs approuvés par la communauté scientifique. Parallèlement, il est nécessaire de
développer des études qualitatives, interventionnistes et conceptuelles, accompagnées de réflexions critiques sur l’étude de la
SAT des traducteurs.
