The pentathlon approach to translating Arabic songs into English

Abstract
The study aims to investigate the strategies used to translate three Arabic songs performed by the Lebanese singer
Fairuz, an iconic vocalist and one of the most celebrated singers in the history of the Arab world. The analyzed data comprised
the translations of three songs provided by five university professors of English and Translation. The translations were assessed
using Low, Peter. 2005. “The
Pentathlon Approach to Translating Songs.” Song and Significance, edited
by Dinda L. Gorlée, 185–212. Leiden: Brill. five criteria: singability, rhyme, rhythm, sense, and naturalness.
The findings showed that the translators employed strategies such as literal translation, insertion, omission, adaptation,
paraphrasing, transposition, and substitution. The analysis indicated that a successful song translation maintains faithfulness in
terms of sense and naturalness while retaining musicality in terms of singability, rhyme, and rhythm. Fairuz’s songs also contain
many cultural elements, requiring additional skill and awareness in this area. The results further indicated that translators who
prioritized faithfulness struggled to achieve musicality, while those who focused on musicality experienced shifts and deviations
regarding sense. The study concludes that both content and music are of high relevance, so translators must find a balance between
the two.

Résumé
Cette étude vise à examiner les stratégies employées pour traduire trois chansons arabes interprétées par la
chanteuse libanaise Fairuz, figure emblématique et l’une des artistes les plus célébrées de l’histoire du monde arabe. Les données
analysées proviennent des traductions de ces trois chansons réalisées par cinq professeurs d’université spécialisés en anglais et
en traduction. Ces traductions ont été évaluées selon les cinq critères définis par Low, Peter. 2005. “The
Pentathlon Approach to Translating Songs.” Song and Significance, edited
by Dinda L. Gorlée, 185–212. Leiden: Brill. : chantabilité, rime, rythme, sens et naturel. Les résultats montrent que les traducteurs ont recours à diverses
stratégies, notamment la traduction littérale, l’insertion, l’omission, l’adaptation, la paraphrase, la transposition et la
substitution. L’analyse révèle qu’une traduction convaincante d’une chanson maintient la fidélité au sens et au naturel tout en
préservant la musicalité en termes de chantabilité, de rime et de rythme. Les chansons de Fairuz contiennent également de nombreux
éléments culturels, nécessitant une compétence et une sensibilité accrues dans ce domaine. Les résultats indiquent en outre que
les traducteurs privilégiant la fidélité au texte source rencontrent des difficultés à préserver la musicalité, tandis que ceux
qui privilégient la musicalité entraînent des modifications et des écarts de sens. L’étude conclut que le contenu et la musique
revêtent une importance égale, et que les traducteurs doivent trouver un équilibre entre ces deux aspects.
