Reconstruing the image of Shan Gui
A multimodal translation from poetry to painting

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the image reconstrual of Shan Gui 山鬼 in the multimodal translation from the poem Shan Gui to three renowned
paintings, i.e., Li Gonglin’s 李公麟 (date unknown;
1049–1106), Fu Baoshi’s 傅抱石’s (1945) and Xu Beihong’s
徐悲鸿 (1943), within the framework of social semiotics,
and to explore the reason why the image changed through recontextualization. It is found that the image of Shan Gui reconstrued by
Li looks like a detached sprite; Fu is a sentimental goddess, while Xu is a mundane human girl. Contextual factors, including
scholastic explanations of the poem, the individual orientation of painters, and their media choices, contribute to such image
divergence.
Résumé
Notre étude vise à analyser la reconstitution visuelle de Shan Gui lors de la traduction multimodale du poème
Shan Gui dans les trois peintures fameuses de Li Gonglin (date exacte inconnue mais du 11ème
siècle), de Fu Baoshi (1945) et de Xu Beihong (1943). Cette analyse est menée dans le cadre de la sémiotique sociale.
D’autre part, on vise à explorer les raisons pour lesquelles l’image en question change au cours de la
recontextualisation. Celle élaborée par Li semble un esprit détaché alors que celle de Fu est comme une déesse sentimentale et
celle de Xu un jeune fille bien terre-à-terre. De telles divergences dans les représentations peuvent se justifier par des
éléments contextuels comme les explications savantes du poème, les penchants individuels des peintres et leur choix des
supports.
