From classical to cosmopolitan
Post-colonial translations of Cilapattikaram

Abstract
This paper addresses the unique challenges a translator would have when translating a text from a postcolonial
country, especially one that has significance amongst the language speakers, such as Cilapattikaram. This paper compares three
English translations of Cilapattikaram, a centuries-old Tamil poem that has an undeniable significance among the Tamil-speaking
population. By analyzing three English translations of Cilapattikaram, done in the 1930s, 1960s, and 1990s, respectively, the
paper examines how translation situated in the political space of decolonization and regional identity affects the text for a
better understanding of the dilemmas of the translator and the effect of translation has on the meanings of the text.

Cet article traite des défis uniques que doit relever un traducteur lorsqu’il s’agit de traduire un texte
provenant d’un pays postcolonial, en particulier un texte qui a de l’importance pour les locuteurs de la langue, tel que le
Cilapattikaram. Cet article compare trois traductions anglaises de Cilapattikaram, un poème
tamoul vieux de plusieurs siècles qui revêt une importance indéniable pour la population tamoule. En analysant trois traductions
anglaises de Cilapattikaram, réalisées respectivement dans les années 1930, 1960 et 1990, l’article examine
comment la traduction située dans l’espace politique de la décolonisation et de l’identité régionale affecte le texte pour une
meilleure compréhension des dilemmes du traducteur et de l’effet de la traduction sur les significations du texte.
