Gatekeeping of translations in Shinchunji in South Korea during the Cold War (1946–1954) from the text mining approach

Abstract
This study examines the change of criteria for selecting texts for translation in Shinchunji, the most influential magazine in liberated Korea. Using data mining methods, the study analyzes the topics and narratives of the source texts on the two occupiers of Korea: the US and the USSR. The results reveal that institutional, domestic, and international changes affected the magazine’s selection process, as its editors’ perceptions of the two powers changed over time. The selected texts’ topics and narratives show the ideological transformation of the publishing company from a left-leaning or moderate to an anti-communist governmental mouthpiece, expressing the editors’ desire to win over the minds of the Koreans for nation-building.
Résumé
Cet article étudie le changement des critères de sélection des textes à traduire pour le magazine le plus influent de la Corée libérée. En adoptant des méthodes d′exploration de données, cette étude analyse les thématiques et les récits des textes sources sélectionnés à propos des deux occupants de la Corée : les États-Unis et l′URSS. Les résultats révèlent que la perception des agents de traduction sur les deux pouvoirs a changé progressivement au cours des évolutions de la situation institutionnelle, nationale et internationale, ce qui a affecté les processus de sélection des textes. Les thématiques et les récits dans les textes sélectionnés montrent non seulement la transformation idéologique de la maison d’édition, qui est passée d′une position de gauche ou modérée à celle d’un porte-parole gouvernemental anticommuniste. Les textes démontrent aussi les campagnes des agents de traduction pour convaincre les Coréens de les soutenir dans la construction de la nouvelle Corée souhaitée par les éditeurs.
