A shift model to identify influence between translations

Abstract
In 1989 and 1990, Kitty van Leuven-Zwart published two articles on the similarities and dissimilarities between a translation and its original. My research is based on a classification model which derives primarily from Van Leuven-Zwart’s comparative method, although I also work with concepts from other authors. The major difference to Van Leuven-Zwart’s research is that the main aim of the model I propose is not to indicate the differences between a translation and the original, but to detect whether previous translations have had any influence upon the studied translation. The goal of this article is to demonstrate the effectiveness of the shift approach to find out the relationship between different translations. I explain and illustrate the classification model by comparing the Catalan translation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth by Josep M. de Sagarra (Sagarra, Josep M. de. 1959. See under Shakespeare.Google Scholar logo with link to Google Scholar) with previous French, Spanish and Catalan translations in order to ascertain whether these texts had any influence upon Sagarra’s translation.
Résumé
En 1989 et 1990, Kitty van Leuven-Zwart a publié deux articles sur les similitudes et les différences entre une traduction et son original. Mes recherches se basent sur un modèle de classification qui découle principalement de la méthode comparative de Van Leuven-Zwart, bien que je travaille également avec des concepts d’autres auteurs. La différence majeure avec la recherche de Van Leuven-Zwart est que le but principal du modèle que je propose n’est pas d’indiquer les différences entre une traduction et l’original, mais de détecter si des traductions antérieures ont eu une quelconque influence sur la traduction étudiée. L’objectif de cet article est de démontrer l’efficacité de l’approche par transfert pour découvrir la relation entre différentes traductions. J’explique et j’illustre le modèle de classification en comparant la traduction catalane de Macbeth de William Shakespeare par Josep M. de Sagarra (Sagarra, Josep M. de. 1959. See under Shakespeare.Google Scholar logo with link to Google Scholar) à des traductions françaises, espagnoles et catalanes antérieures, pour déterminer si ces textes ont eu une quelconque influence sur la traduction de Sagarra.
