New interpretation and techniques of transcreation

This article points out some “loopholes” in the traditional Chinese-English translation theories, and proposes several transcreation theories to countermeasure the “loopholes”, illustrating non-equivalences. In particular, the article proposes a novel translation/transcreation theory that incorporates the writing field, in both the source and target languages, into the traditional translation field. This is for the purpose of cultural transmission and integration. In addition, the article illustrates the relationship between translation and writing by dissecting the translation/transcreation process into two processes: understanding and writing. Moreover, it suggests that the transcreation field develop some criteria, such as: fidelity, flexibility and creativity, and that all the science, social science and humanities subareas in the transcreation field are categorized according to these criteria. In order to support the transcreation theories and multidisciplinary translation theories proposed in this article, some typical examples and transcreation techniques that push the envelope of existing transcreation theories are provided. This article may shed new light on the limitations of, and possible solutions to, machine translation. It may also answer questions like: “Is understanding unimportant to machine translation?”

Cet article attire l’attention sur certaines « lacunes » dans les théories traditionnelles concernant la traduction du chinois en anglais et, pour y remédier, propose plusieurs théories en matière de transcréation, en illustrant des non-équivalences. Cet article propose plus particulièrement une théorie originale de la traduction/transcréation, qui intègre le domaine de l’écriture, tant dans la langue source que dans la langue cible, au domaine traditionnel de la traduction. Et ce, dans un objectif de transmission et d’intégration culturelles. En outre, cet article illustre la relation entre la traduction et l’écriture en fractionnant la démarche de la traduction/transcréation en deux processus : la compréhension et l’écriture. De plus, l’article suggère que le domaine de la transcréation développe certains critères, tels que la fidélité, la flexibilité et la créativité, et que tous les sous-domaines des sciences, sciences sociales et sciences humaines dans le domaine de la transcréation sont classés en fonction de ces critères. Afin de confirmer la validité des théories sur la transcréation et la traduction multidisciplinaire, proposées dans cet article, celui-ci présente quelques exemples et techniques de transcréation typiques, qui repoussent les limites des théories existantes en la matière. Cet article pourrait apporter un nouvel éclairage sur les limites de la traduction automatique et ses solutions éventuelles. Il pourrait aussi répondre à des questions telles que celle-ci : « La compréhension est-elle sans importance dans la traduction automatique ? »
