Translation quality gained through the implementation of the iso en 17100:2015 and the usage of the blockchain
The case of sworn translation in Spain

Abstract
The iso en 17100:2015 (Translation Services – Requirements for Translation Services) is
a quality standard including a set of provisions (requirements and recommendations) for all the core aspects of the translation
process, considered as an industrial asset. Its main (or, rather, its only) goal is the implementation of a series of
activities deemed as necessary for the delivery of a quality translation end-product, on the assumption that a quality process
leads ineluctably to a quality end-product. The standard’s provisions do not refer to what is in Spain known as traducción
jurada (sworn translation). This paper addresses what the standard leaves out: a proposal for the implementation of its
provisions, combined with the usage of the blockchain and other disruptive technologies to
sworn translation, by focusing on the illustrative case of Spain. It discusses the applicable regulations concerning sworn
translation and sworn translation standardization and explores the methods through which the combined
application of a functional translation methodological framework, the provisions of the iso en 17100:2015 standard, a
standardized macrotextual pattern and a number of security devices and disruptive technologies might contribute to building a
quality management system in the domain of sworn translation.

Résumé
La norme iso en 17100:2015 (Services de traduction – Exigences relatives aux services de
traduction) est une norme de qualité comprenant un ensemble de dispositions (exigences et recommandations) sur tous
les aspects essentiels du processus de traduction, considéré comme un actif industriel. Son objectif principal (ou plutôt son
objectif unique) est la mise en œuvre d’une série d’activités jugées nécessaires pour fournir un produit final de
qualité en matière de traduction, en partant du principe qu’un processus de qualité conduit inéluctablement à un produit final de
qualité. Les dispositions de la norme ne font pas référence à ce que l’on appelle, en Espagne, la traducción jurada
(traduction jurée). Le présent document traite de ce que la norme omet : une proposition pour la mise en œuvre de ses
dispositions, combinée à l’utilisation de la chaîne de blocs et d’autres technologies perturbatrices pour la traduction
assermentée, en se concentrant sur le cas de l’Espagne en guise d’exemple. Il examine les réglementations applicables à la
traduction assermentée et à la normalisation de la traduction assermentée et étudie les méthodes par
lesquelles l’application combinée d’un cadre méthodologique fonctionnel de traduction, des dispositions de la norme iso en
17100:2015, d’un modèle macrotextuel normalisé et d’un certain nombre de dispositifs de sécurité et de technologies perturbatrices
pourrait contribuer à la mise en place d’un système de gestion de la qualité dans le domaine de la traduction assermentée.
