Insights into a new paradigm in translation

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the reflection and recreation of the physical landscape in literary texts and in their translations; to explore in what ways nature is represented and, secondly, to discuss aspects of this process in the light of the translational norms proposed by Toury. The focus is the idea that language and culture, the core of literature, are to be transferred to other linguistic and cultural mediums during translation, and constitute the ecological environment of the text. This undertaking assigns to the translator the task of selecting, adapting and recreating this material in the foreign environment. An ecocritical approach will be adopted to explore how and how far this task is materialized by studying a Turkish author Yaşar Kemal’s novel Ortadirek translated as The Wind from the Plain. Yaşar Kemal is regarded as the most ecologically-minded author of Turkish literature and his novels portray nature as the mental landscapes of man, a force under which the constituents of the text are recreated at every linguistic and culture-bound effort of the author. Hence, the main endeavour of this study will be to bring to the surface, with an eco-critical approach, the translational preferences of the translator of Ortadirek and their significance in the recreation of Kemal’s ecological vision in the translation.

L’objectif de cet article est d’attirer l’attention sur la réflexion et la reconstitution du paysage physique dans les textes littéraires et dans leurs traductions, d’explorer la manière dont la nature est représentée et, d’autre part, de discuter des aspects de ce processus à la lumière des normes de traduction proposées par Toury. L’accent est mis sur l’idée que la langue et la culture – l’essence même de la littérature –, doivent être transférées vers d’autres supports linguistiques et culturels pendant la traduction et qu’elles constituent l’environnement écologique du texte. Cette entreprise attribue au traducteur la tâche de sélectionner, d’adapter et de recréer ce matériel dans l’environnement étranger. Une approche écocritique sera adoptée pour explorer comment et dans quelle mesure cette tâche est matérialisée par l’étude du roman Ortadirek de l’auteur turc Yaşar Kemal, traduit sous le titre The Wind from the Plain. Yaşar Kemal est considéré comme l’auteur le plus écologiste de la littérature turque et ses romans dépeignent la nature comme étant les paysages mentaux de l’homme, une force par laquelle les composants du texte sont recréés à chaque effort linguistique et culturel de l’auteur. Par conséquent, le principal objectif de cette étude sera de mettre en évidence, avec une approche écocritique, les préférences du traducteur d’Ortadirek en matière de traduction et leur importance dans la reconstitution de la vision écologique de Kemal dans la traduction.
