Abstract
The purpose of this article is to examine certain cultural and ethical aspects which make the translator’s task
arduous. Firstly, it is demonstrated that the indissolubility of language and culture (Nida, Eugene. 2002. “Language and culture, two interrelated symbolic systems”. In Identité, altérité, équivalence? La traduction comme relation, ed. by Fortunato Israël, 7–15. Paris-Caen: Lettres modernes Minard.) means that the translator must possess high-level cultural competency and an understanding of context (Herbulot, Florence. 2004. “La Théorie interprétative ou Théorie du sens : point de vue d’une praticienne”. Meta 4921: 307–315. ). Secondly, by applying Narrative Theory to translation (Baker, Mona. 2006. “Translation and Activism: Emerging Patterns of Narrative Community”. The Massachusetts Review 47 (3): 462–484.), the article highlights ethical considerations associated with translating
certain narratives and advances Fisher’s narrative paradigm as a possible response (Fisher, Walter. 1984. “ Narration as a Human Communication Paradigm: The Case of Public Moral Argument”. Communication Monographs, Vol. 511: 1–22. , . 1985. “The Narrative Paradigm: In the Beginning”. Journal of Communication 35 (4): 74–89. , . 1997. “Narration, Reason, and Community”. L’objectif de cet article est d’examiner certains aspects culturels et éthiques qui rendent la tâche du
traducteur ardue. Premièrement, il est démontré que l’indissociabilité de la langue et de la culture (Nida, Eugene. 2002. “Language and culture, two interrelated symbolic systems”. In Identité, altérité, équivalence? La traduction comme relation, ed. by Fortunato Israël, 7–15. Paris-Caen: Lettres modernes Minard.) signifie que le traducteur doit posséder des compétences culturelles de haut niveau et une
bonne compréhension du contexte (Herbulot, Florence. 2004. “La Théorie interprétative ou Théorie du sens : point de vue d’une praticienne”. Meta 4921: 307–315. ). Deuxièmement, en appliquant la théorie
narrative à la traduction (Baker, Mona. 2006. “Translation and Activism: Emerging Patterns of Narrative Community”. The Massachusetts Review 47 (3): 462–484.), l’article met en lumière les considérations
