Teaching English-Chinese textual translation strategies

Abstract
The topic-chain is a typical characteristic used to distinguish Chinese discourse from other languages, such as
English. By studying how to make use of the topic-chain, one learns how to decipher English into natural and idiomatic Chinese
translation. The idea of using topic-chains to explore English-Chinese (E-C) textual translation is relatively new to translation
studies. As such, this paper provides a detailed account of cross-linguistic differences between English and Chinese, with regard
to the topic-chain, as well as the differences between the topic-chain model and the approach of thematic progression theory. This
study, based on contrastive analysis, constructs a model consisting of specific procedures that are simple and easy to use,
thereby making English-Chinese textual translation a more manageable process. Use of topic-chain strategies will promote the
efficiency and quality of E-C translation, and allow for Chinese translated text to be more idiomatic. This paper provides an
overview of effective textual translation strategies that are useful both for translators and the field of translation studies as
a whole. It addresses how to teach translation effectively to students, providing practical theory and practice for pedagogical
instruction. Meanwhile, an experiment conducted provides the evidence that topic-chain for pedagogical instruction is
significantly valid. The pedagogical design of these strategies emphasizes the training of students’ textual awareness and targets
language-sensitive awareness. It is assumed that didactics can help students gain bilingual competence and strengthen their core
transfer competence. This study, therefore, is significant not only in exploring the benefits and uses of textual translation
studies, but has practical value when applied directly to translation learning and teaching.
Résumé
La chaîne thématique est une caractéristique typique utilisée pour distinguer le discours chinois
d’autres langues, comme l’anglais. En étudiant comment utiliser la chaîne thématique, on apprend à décoder
l’anglais en une traduction chinoise naturelle et idiomatique. L’idée d’utiliser des chaînes thématiques
pour explorer la traduction de textes de l’anglais en chinois est relativement nouvelle en traductologie. Cet article
fournit un compte rendu détaillé des différences interlinguistiques entre l’anglais et le chinois, en ce qui concerne la
chaîne thématique, ainsi que des différences entre le modèle de la chaîne thématique et l’approche de la théorie de
progression thématique. Cette étude, basée sur l’analyse contrastive, construit un modèle composé de procédures
spécifiques, simples à utiliser, ce qui permet de gérer plus facilement le processus de traduction de textes de l’anglais
en chinois. L’utilisation de stratégies de chaînes thématiques favorisera l’efficacité et la qualité de la
traduction anglais-chinois et rendra les textes traduits plus idiomatiques. Cet article donne un aperçu des stratégies efficaces
de traduction de textes qui sont utiles pour les traducteurs et pour l’ensemble du secteur de la traductologie. Il traite
de la façon d’enseigner efficacement la traduction aux étudiants en leur fournissant une théorie et une pratique pour
l’enseignement pédagogique. Entre-temps, une expérience menée fournit la preuve que la chaîne thématique dans
l’enseignement pédagogique est éminemment valable. La conception pédagogique de ces stratégies met l’accent sur la
formation de la conscience textuelle des étudiants et cible la sensibilisation à la langue. On suppose que la didactique peut
aider les étudiants à acquérir des compétences bilingues et à renforcer leurs compétences de base en matière de transfert. Par
conséquent, cette étude est importante non seulement pour explorer les avantages et les utilisations des études de traduction de
textes, mais elle a aussi une valeur pratique lorsqu’elle est appliquée directement à l’apprentissage et à
l’enseignement de la traduction.
