The reception of subtitled films from a sociological perspective

Abstract
Spain has traditionally been a dubbing country. Nevertheless, subtitled versions are becoming more visible nowadays. One of the
reasons that explain the increasing presence of subtitled films may be the growing concentration of English-speaking people in
some areas. But it is not the only factor that explains this often unnoticed transformation: the ease of access to subtitled
versions of TV series on the Internet, and the habit of watching subtitled films in other contexts such as film festivals or
cinema forums, might help to understand why audiences seem attracted to the subtitled versions of films. In any case, while there
may be many surmises, there is little data to confirm them. This article analyses the results of an empirical study thought to
provide some information about the reception of subtitled films within the context of a cinema forum held on a weekly basis in a
specific Spanish area. The overall purpose of the work is to shed some light on both the audience’s profile and its opinion about
subtitling as an alternative way of watching foreign films in a dubbing country. The study is carried out through a survey that
allows us to interpret the resulting conclusions from a sociological perspective.
Résumé
L’Espagne est un pays où le doublage est fréquemment utilisé. Cependant, les versions sous-titrées se font plus fréquentes
de nos jours. La présence croissante de films sous-titrés pourrait s’expliquer par une plus grande concentration
d’anglophones dans certaines régions. Ce n’est toutefois pas le seul facteur qui explique cette évolution – qui
passe souvent inaperçue. La facilité d’accès aux versions sous-titrées des séries télévisées sur Internet et
l’habitude consistant à regarder des films sous-titrés dans d’autres contextes, comme les festivals de cinéma ou
les cinés-forums, pourraient expliquer pourquoi le public semble attiré par des versions sous-titrées. Quoi qu’il en soit,
peu de données prouvent le bien-fondé de ces hypothèses. Cet article analyse les résultats d’une étude empirique, destinée
à fournir des informations sur l’accueil réservé aux films sous-titrés, dans le contexte d’un ciné-forum organisé
chaque semaine dans une région espagnole spécifique. L’objectif général de l’étude est de mettre en lumière tant
le profil du public que le point de vue concernant le sous-titrage de films étrangers, dans un pays où le doublage est couramment
utilisé. L’étude se fonde sur une enquête qui nous permet d’interpréter les résultats et les conclusions dans une
perspective sociologique.
