From El Gran Meaulnes to Meaulnes el Grande

A comparative study of the Spanish retranslations of a French classic

Abstract
The present contribution aims at a comparative study of the Spanish retranslations of the French classic Le Grand Meaulnes. With the objective of identifying macro and micro-structural variations among the various retranslations, a parallel corpus is compiled, the source-text and the various translations are aligned and imported into a translation memory which allows for a targeted analysis of specific linguistic elements. The results obtained from the corpus analysis show that, despite their differences the retranslations display a relative homogeneity, in so far as they are largely source-text oriented and foreignizing. Relative homogeneity notwithstanding, differences can be observed between twentieth century-translations and those carried out in the twenty-first-century. The translators of the latter take a specific approach to translating the novel, either as a literary critic or by taking a critical stance towards a more assimilative approach adopted in an earlier translation.
Résumé
Cet article porte sur une étude comparative des retraductions espagnoles du roman classique français Le Grand Meaulnes. Dans l’objectif d’identifier des variations macro et micro-structurelles entre les différentes retraductions, un corpus parallèle a été compilé, le texte source et les différentes traductions étant alignées et importées dans une mémoire de traduction, ce qui permet une analyse ciblée d’éléments linguistiques spécifiques. Les résultats obtenus de l’analyse de corpus montrent que, en dépit de leurs différences, les retraductions présentent une homogénéité relative, dans la mesure où elles sont largement orientées vers le texte source et une étrangéisation. Nonobstant cette relative homogénéité, on observe des différences entre les traductions du vingtième siècle et celles réalisées au vingt-et-unième siècle. Les traducteurs du vingt-et-unième siècle adoptent une approche spécifique pour traduire le roman, soit en tant que critiques littéraires, soit en affichant un point de vue critique à l’égard de l’approche plus assimilatrice, adoptée par l’un de leurs prédécesseurs.
