Consider the following five questions (6.1 through 6.5) and give your comments.

6.1 How many cigarettes a day do you smoke? ………………………………………

Indicate to what degree the following statements apply to you. (1=totally agree; 2=agree to some extent; 3=do not agree, but neither disagree; 4=disagree to some extent; 5=disagree totally)

Definition. Do not count on a consensus about what “one cigarette” is.

Dissonance. Most people do not like to contradict themselves. Also, they like to present a positive image of themselves. Now, first asking people about their smoking, then asking them whether they know smoking is bad for you, and then asking them whether they consider themselves to be rational may lead to dishonest answers. Moreover, it will not be too difficult for respondents to guess where this questionnaire is going.
