Development of Research Work at SSLM, Trieste
The paper starts with a description of the historical evolution which led the SSLM to initiate interpretation research. It then describes research activities done within the School, and outlines the advantages for the students of such an endeavor as conducted in partial fulfillment of graduation requirements.
The institutional history of the Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori of Trieste (SSLM) can be divided into three stages. The first stage began in the academic year 1953-4 with the creation of special interpretation courses in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce at the University of Trieste. They were launched by Professor Pierpaolo Luzzato Fegiz with the cooperation of Jean Herbert, the famous Chief Interpreter of the United Nations, and were modelled on the Geneva School.
