С позиции сегодняшнего дня, понятие «поворот» в контексте лингвистической науки, пожалуй, напоминает нам о «прагматическом повороте», имевшем место в лингвистике в 70-х годах 20-го века. Сейчас это рассматривается как явный переход от абстрактных и жёстких догм трансформационной порождающей грамматики, исключающей все стороны «экстралингвистической реальности», к более конструктивному, открытому и гибкому подходу, согласно которому язык – это деятельность, непосредственно связанная с реальной действительностью и, в частности, с конкретной ситуацией. Одной из главных движущих сил была теория речевых актов, ставшая впоследствии революционной. Процесс продолжился: лингвистика обогатилась за счёт разработки социального и коммуникативного аспектов языка, возникла лингвистики текста, и всё это проложило путь к формированию будущей дисциплины «Теория перевода» (Translation Studies).
