Artikkel „Tõlketeadus“ kogumikus „Tõlketeaduse käsiraamat“ kätkeb ohtu, et seda peetakse üleliigseks, tarbetuks või mõttetuks iseenese naba imetlemiseks. Tõlketeaduses toimuvat on kahtlemata käsitletud ka käsiraamatu teistes artiklites, mis ulatuvad „Adaptatsioonist“ kuni „Veebi & tõlkimiseni“. Siiski on tõlketeaduse mõiste vastuoluline & artiklis püütakse sellega seotud probleeme pisutki leevendada, keskendudes tõlketeaduse olemusele, ajaloole, arengule & käsitustele alates 20. sajandi teisest poolest. Eesmärgiks on aidata paremini mõista teemasid, mida uuritakse detailsemalt käsiraamatu teistes peatükkides, & tuua paremini esile keskseid vaidlusküsimusi.
