Туризм в современном обществе является важным социальным явлением, оказывающим значительное влияние на экономику. За последние два десятилетия число туристов увеличилось более чем в два раза — с 664 миллионов в 1999 году до 1,5 миллиардов в 2019 году, — а доходы от туризма, полученные во всем мире, выросли с 455 миллиардов в 1999 году до 1,7 триллиона долларов США в 2019 году, превратив туристическую индустрию в самую быстрорастущую индустрию в мире, опережающую рост мировой экономики (www​.e​-unwto​.org).
