Поняття « статусу » може стосуватись соціальної ієрархії, а також групової приналежності. Згідно термінології Гоффмана (Goffman 1981) цей термін також може стосуватись рівня ідентифікації або залученості до соціальної взаємодії. З усіх трьох позицій статус усного перекладача можна охарактеризувати як неоднозначний і амбівалентний.
