Kääntäminen on aina yhdistetty itseään suurempiin kokonaisuuksiin implisiittisesti tai eksplisiittisesti: sitä on pidetty osatekijänä kielten, kulttuurien ja semioottisten järjestelmien välisessä viestinnässä. Strukturalistisen ja systeemisen kirjallisuudentutkimuksen synnyn myötä niin kutsuttu manipulaatiokoulukunta ja polysysteemiteoreetikot loivat kääntämiselle systeemiteoreettisen pohjan.
