За Дуґласом Робінсоном (Robinson 2000: 103–107), релігійний переклад є неясним з точки зору перекладацького статусу (Чи можна або чи слід перекладати релігійні тексти? Як, коли, для кого і з якими запобіжниками або яким регулюванням слід здійснювати переклад релігійних текстів?), сакральності (Чи перекладений релігійний текст зберігає свою сакральність або чи він є тільки копією священного тексту? Що таке сакральність, в чому вона полягає чи перебуває, чи чому притаманна, і чи можна її перенести через межі культури?) і тексту (Що таке релігійний текст в усній культурі? Якими є межі релігійного тексту в літературній культурі? Чи береться до уваги літургійне використання перекладеного тексту?). Ці стрижневі питання слугують для контекстуалізації природи перекладацької діяльності відносно трьох основних монотеїстичних релігій – юдаїзму, християнства й ісламу та їхніх основних релігійних текстів – Талмуду, Біблії та Корану.
