لقد أصبح تحليل الأدوات اللفظية والبصرية المحيطة بالترجمات المنشورة والعارضة لها مندمجا بشكل متزايد ضمن الأبحاث التطبيقية المتعلقة بالنصوص المترجمة. يشار إلى هذه الأدوات التي توجد على عتبات الترجمات بمصطلح "المناص"، وهو مصطلح وضع بادئ الأمر ليشمل عناصر عرض الأعمال الأدبية بما في ذلك الترجمات على سبيل الذكر لا الحصر. تتضمن الأمثلة التقليدية للمناص العناوين، والعناوين الفرعية، والأسماء المستعارة، والمقدمات، والإهداءات، والتصديرات، والاستهلالات، والعناوين الداخلية، والهوامش والحواشي والخاتمات (ماكسي 1997: xviii)، وكلها تشكل أدوات وقواعد، ضمن الكتاب وخارجه، وتلعب دور وسيط بين العمل والقارئ. كان  جيرار جينيت هو من وضع مصطلح "المناص"  في كتابه (عتبات: من النص إلى المناص)، Seuils (1987) المترجم إلى اللغة الأنجليزية بParatexts: The Thresholds of Interpretation (جينيت 1997)، وجذب ــ المصطلح ــ بسرعة انتباه الباحثين في مجال الترجمة ممن يرغبون في التركيز على العناصر التي تمد الجسور بين النصوص المترجمة وقرائها، وبالتالي تؤثر على استقبالهم لها بشكل رئيسٍ.
